Trocaire Poetry Competition
Congratulations to two pupils in Fourth Class who took First Prize and Runner-up Prize in the Junior Category of TrĂ³caire’s Annual Poetry Competition in association with Poetry Ireland.
The theme of the competition was”Before the Storm”,exploring how people prepare for extreme weather events caused by climate change.
All pupils in Third and Fourth Class learned how Honduras in Central America is one country which is very vulnerable to the impacts of climate change and was the worst -affected country in the world from 1993 to 2014. During this period of time,at least 65 extreme weather events affected Honduras. The pupils looked at a short film on climate change and discussed the effects it has on our world.
Then they put pen to paper and wrote some very powerful poetry.
On 15th May Mrs. Wallace received a phonecall from Poetry Ireland to say that two of her pupils had won prizes in the Poetry Competition! We were all so excited.
On Wednesday 24th May we headed to The National Library of Ireland where the children experienced reading their poems, received their prizes and had lots and lots of photos taken. They were presented with a book of the winning poems, something to treasure forever.A very memorable day, hopefully the beginning of great things to come from these two talented poets!
